The HCG diet is effective for weight loss, but it has a very strict food regimen that needs to be followed. If you don’t follow it precisely then the diet won’t work. One of the facets of the diet is protein, but for vegetarians, this could be an issue.

Protein is most often found in lean meats. A vegetarian HCG diet is more difficult, but not impossible to achieve. We’ll examine the various aspects of the HCG diet and how vegetarians can modify it to make sure they get their allotted amounts of protein.

Don’t give up on the HCG diet because you’re a vegetarian.

What is the HCG Diet?

Many diets restrict what kinds of food a person can eat, but the HCG diet is highly restrictive and can result in 1 to 2 pounds lost per day. It also reduces hunger pangs usually associated with dieting.

HCG stands for human chorionic gonadotropin, a hormone most commonly associated with pregnancy. The human body produces the hormone outside of the pregnancy and in both men and women.

In the diet, the person is limited to about 500 calories per day and taking HCG injections. This comes in the form of two servings of protein, usually lean meat such as chicken or fish, two servings of vegetables and two small servings of carbohydrates.

Vegetarians can find it difficult to achieve the two servings of proteins, but there are ways around eating meat.

The Vegetarian HCG Diet

The key to being a vegetarian on the HCG diet is finding alternative sources of protein that are not meat. If you are a lacto-ovo vegetarian, then it’s much simpler than if you’re a vegan.

Vegans refuse to eat any animal products including dairy and eggs. If you’re not vegan, then you can achieve your protein requirements using one full egg and three egg whites as a serving of protein. You can also use fat-free cottage cheese where one serving is equal to 100 grams.

Cottage cheese should only be used sparingly has it has been known to slow down weight loss. Keep a diligent eye on your weight if using cottage cheese.

If you’re vegan, then you still have options. Vegetarian burgers made of beans, which are high in protein. Be careful of the type of veggie burger you get in case it has any dairy or egg products.

Protein shakes are also an excellent way to get your much-needed protein without resorting to meat, eggs or dairy.

HCG Diet and Tofu

Tofu has long been used as an alternative to meat for vegetarians, but soybeans have their own problems when it comes to the HCG diet. Soy can dramatically decrease your overall weight loss because it produces estrogen and impacts how you burn fat.

If you do choose to have tofu, do it in moderation and keep a close eye on your weight loss.

You Can Be Vegetarian and on the HCG Diet

A vegetarian HCG diet is possible if you’re willing to find alternatives to your protein intake. Vegetarians can lose considerable weight on the diet because there are options.
